RS Tigers Win One and Drop Two at Worland

On Saturday the Varsity team played three matches at the Worland Jamboree. The first match was against the Lander Tigers, this match was a full eighty minute match. Rock Springs came out of the gate very hesitant but later controlled most of the run of play. However Lander was able to score on there opportunities and Rock Springs could not. Lander scored in the 9th minute of the game and again in the 51st minute of the game. Rock Springs out shot the Lander Tigers 19 - 11 in the game. Bryce Kalista had 7 saves in the net for Rock Springs. Man of the Match - Gilbert Gonzalez (6 shots and 1 meg)



The second match of the day was against the defending 3A state champion Cody Broncs. This was a 40 minute game or half game. The Tigers looked poor in this game, lacking intensity, communication and as a team not keeping to their formation. The Broncs played a great game while the Tigers struggled and the Broncs came away with a 4 to 0 victory. The Broncs scored two goals in the first half, in the 10th and 13th minute. Two more goals were added in the second half in the 28th and 35th minute. Cody only out shot the Tigers 9 - 7 but made the most of the opportunities making almost 50% of their chances. After the match, the hopes of the Tigers was that this match would serve as a wake up call for the level of play the team was expected to be at. The final match of the day saw the Tigers against the Worland Warriors. Again this was a half game or 40 minute match. The Tigers jumped out on top of the Warriors quickly with a goal from Matt Lehman, assisted by Storie Ratcliff in the 4th minute. The Tigers scored again in the first half when Storie Ratcliff collected a ball that was headed from a Worland player and had a one on one with the keeper. Storie snuck it by him to put the Tigers up 2 to 0 at the half. The third and final goal of the match came in the 25th minute as Erick Mata from the left side of the field dribbled into the middle and shot a laser of a shot that beat the keeper and dove under the bar from about 20 yards out. Tigers Lose First Round at State

On Thursday May 21st the Tigers squared off against the #1 team in the state, the Cheyenne Central Indians, at the Big Horn Equestrian Center in Sheridan WY. The Tigers had a good strategy and good execution however the Indian were a more talented squad and came away with the victory. The Indians scored in the 7th minute and then sneaked two more goals in right before the half in the 35th and 37th minute. The Tigers down 3 to zero at half regrouped and played hard and inspired in the second half but could not score on the stingy Central defense. The Indians scored their fourth and final goal in the 58th minute. The loss means the Tigers enter into the consolation portion of the tournament and the best they can finish is fifth place at the 2009 State Soccer Cup. The Tigers record falls to ten wins and eight losses. RS Plays Better But Wolves Prevail

On Thursday at Crossroads Park in Rock Springs the RS Tigers faced their arch rivals the GR Wolves in the second leg of the Sweetwater Cup. The Tigers were looking to avenge their earlier embarrassing defeat by upsetting the Wolves. This match was a classic rivalry match and saw the Tigers come to play for 80 minutes. However the Wolves got on the board first when the initial GR shot was saved by Gus Wagner but the deflection found a Wolves' feet and he scored in the 19th minute of play. This was the only score in the first half. The Tigers did see a couple of legitimate chances in the first 40 minutes of play including a header by Alex Arambel. The Tigers game plan seemed to be working as the heavily favored Wolves were frustrated in the 2nd half by the improved play of the Tigers. Then Green River sealed their win by two goal, one in the 61st minute and the other in the 69th minute. Another Tough Opponent Another Loss

On Tuesday in Cheyenne the Rock Springs Tigers played against the East Thunder Bird. East was coming off of a win against their cross town rivals the nationally ranked Cheyenne Central Indians just the week before. The Tigers took the wind in the first half and had their best chances then but were always thwarted by the T-Bird defense. The score at the half was 0 - 0. In the second half the T-Birds used the strong wind to their advantage and scored twice. The goals came in the 47th minute of play and in the 52nd minute of play. The first T-Bird goal was a roofing shot past the keeper from about 25 yards away. The second and last goal of the match was put past the keeper after a scrum in front of the net preceded by a corner kick. The Tigers played hard but could not do what was needed to get close to the East goal. The final score of the match 2 - 0. This drops the Tigers to 1 - 5 - 1.
